Specify the boundary behind “dedicated”
Ask which resources are assigned to the environment and which dependencies remain shared. Storage services, network devices, management systems or the facility itself may still be common failure points. Record these boundaries rather than treating the label as a universal availability guarantee.
Define who administers the operating system, application software and remote management access. The degree of control your team needs should match its ability to approve, monitor and recover changes.
Compare the complete resource arrangement
| Area | Question to answer | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Resource assignment | Which compute and storage resources are reserved? | Provisioning record and service boundary |
| Network placement | Which critical endpoints can the host reach efficiently? | Representative route and connectivity checks |
| Maintenance | What happens during host or component work? | Change window and recovery procedure |
| Data protection | Where are backups held and how are they restored? | Restore record separate from a backup-success notification |
A dedicated machine does not automatically provide application redundancy. Review the service topology and recovery design alongside the host specification.
Test the reason for choosing isolation
Illustrative decision: reporting exports compete with a production service for storage resources. The review compares separating the export workload, changing its schedule and assigning dedicated resources. Measurements determine which option addresses the observed constraint.
Request a proposal that includes the resource assignment, operational access, monitoring and maintenance boundary. If the project is replacing an existing host, add a transition plan and validation window before retiring the original environment. The server purchase and the migration are separate workstreams unless the scope explicitly joins them.
